2005 Bollinger Vieilles Vignes Françaises

It's rare to find even bottles of this rarity, let alone an original 3-bottle case. Bollinger VVF is of course made in miniscule quantities from two parcels of ungrafted pinot noir vines in Aÿ. Prior to 2003, the wine also included a small part from ungrafted vines in Bouzy, but these vines finally succumbed to phylloxera after the 2004 harvest. Hopefully the Aÿ vines will not suffer the same fate.

The 98-point rating Richard Juhlin gave the 2005 VVF is his highest score for this cuvée since the 1979 vintage.

Critic's Notes

Richard Juhlin, 98
The Richard Juhlin Champagne Club

“The first vintage as a pure Aÿ because the phylloxera attacked the unprotected parcelle in Bouzy. Sad in itself, but for the wine rather a profit. Even fewer bottles and this difficult little flat and excessively obese vintage ought to be a disappointment. The reality was different. The highly expressive and intense aroma is similar to the monumental ’96 at the same age and we’re dealing with a really great vintage of VVF. The Aÿ-aroma shines indeed clearer than usually and the fresh and clear acidity present along with a magnificent grand aromatic spectrum. While it offers so much already, a restrained overall dark-energy of power is ready to be unleashed.”
