1995 Cappellano Barolo Pie Franco

Teobaldo Cappellano's mythic Pié Franco was first made in 1994. This is the very rare second vintage.

Until his death in 2009, Teobaldo was one of the giants of Barolo, and we were privileged to be his California importer for the last years of his life. It was during this period that he finally got his due after years of anonymity.

All of his Barolo vines were in Serralunga's Gabutti cru, and in 1989 he decided to replant one section on its own roots, using the rare Michét clone. From 1994 on, there have been two Cappellano Barolos from Gabutti. The first is from the original vines planted in the 1940s: Barolo Rupestris. The second is from the ungrafted vines: Barolo Pié Franco. Both wines are magical, but Pié Franco has an extra dimension rarely seen since ungrafted vines disappeared in much of Europe following the Phylloxera epidemic of the late 1800s.

This bottle is missing its DOCG strip from the neck but is otherwise perfect.
